My mother was a devout christian, she often told me without God on her side she would of never gotten through the times she did raising four children alone in the mountains of eastern Ky. she lived way up this holler with her four children, I had not been born at this time. Two of my sibling had taken sick, it was in the bad part of winter and a big snow had fallen, well anyway the kids were running high temps. and mom being alone with just the kids was using all the home remedies she knew to use but the kids were just getting worse, she said there was no way out of the holler to get them down to the camp to where the doctor was. with no way out and no telephone to call anyone. she told me the only thing she knew to do was pray. she prayed all that day and well into the night. They lived in a little four room house with a kitchen, living room and two bedrooms, the children shared a bedroom, it had two beds in it one for the boys and one for the girls, the beds were close together with just a little table in between, my sister Phyllis and my brother Bruce were the ones that was sick. My mom had sit up with the sick kids and was trying to keep their temps down by rubbing them down with alcohol and water, during all this time she just kept praying. she told me about three in the morning a knock came at her door, she went to answer it and there stood a tall man, a man that she had never seen before and she knew most people down in the camp, he was dressed in a dark long coat and a big wide brimmed hat, he told her his name ( which I have forgotten what it was) he told my mother that he had came to pray for her children, mom said she never thought twice about letting him in at that time, so he came in and went right to the bedroom where the kids were, she said he stood between the beds laying a hand on each child and prayed, after the prayer he told mom to get them up and feed them, he then turned and left, she got the kids up and did as she was told, while the children was eating she said she wondered then how he came up the holler, she never heard a vehicle so she goes to the door to look out, there was no sign of anyone coming through the snow at all, no footprints, no tire marks, nothing showed signs of any visitors at all. The children ate like they were starved, they had not eaten anything since becoming sick. My mother told me that there was no more temperatures or any sign of them being sick at all, they were acting just like normal kids do. She said she never seen this man again and always believed that God had sent an angel in her time of need answering the prayers that she was praying for her children.
I do believe that years later that same angel in different form came again to make a visit, about a month before my mothers passing, my sister Phyllis and I had taken her for a routine doctor's visit, my mother love to sew, crochet and knit so on these outings I would always stop by Wal-Mart, so she could buy whatever sewing supplies she needed, well that day was just like any other, Mom was feeling really well and we were out enjoying the day, after doing our shopping we were getting ready to leave the store to have some lunch, as we were walking out of Wal-Mart ( you know before the super stores, there was a little sitting area in the front of the store) we were coming out there and on a bench sits this lady, she was a large built women of african American descent, as my mom was coming out the door. this lady who my sister or myself had never seen before, jumps to her feet runs over to my mom and proceeds to hug her and saying " Praise the Lord honey God is so Good, keep the faith, it won't be long now until you are going home, Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord, God is good and faithful, keep the faith, keep the faith" well needless to say I was getting a little upset, and she just kept on hugging my mom, but during this time my mother was Praising the Lord also, at first I thought mom knew her from maybe a church that she had attended somewhere but after a while I began getting more upset of the things she was saying to my mom, but after awhile she let go of mom, I never looked back to see where this lady had went or if she was still there, to tell the truth I was glad to be leaving, it kinda gave me the Hebe's gebe's, as we were walking to the car I ask my mom who the lady was, she said she had never seen her before just someone God has sent to her, well let me tell you that really kinda scared me, but as time went on I forgot about this incident. about a month later my mom took really bad sick, the doctors was telling us there was no more hope, mom knew it was her time so she tried to prepare us kids, I would not accept that I was losing my mother and the best friend I could ever have. As days went by mom got worse and worse until I seen it was coming time, I had always been told that when it was time for a christian to pass, angels were encamped around them to welcome them home, I prayed and prayed that God would let me see just one angel, but nothing came, I became angry and didn't understand why I couldn't see just one of the angels that I knew were there, the day my mom passed I went out side to again ask God to please show me an angel, I was standing by my car praying when this came to my heart and I quote" I showed you an angel my child but you would not accept it, remember, you have seen your mother's angel" I knew exactly what he was telling me the lady from Wal-Mart, since we lived in a rather small town I went back to that Wal-Mart several times to try to find that lady but I never seen her again, I came to the conclusion that God gave me an answer to a prayer before it was ever asked. you know even though I was a christian I had a hard time losing my mom. My mother has been gone now for seventeen years, I think of her daily and still have the pain of knowing she is no longer with me in this life but I always have the hope of being with her again some day. I know some are going to find this hard to believe and are very skeptical on these issues and that's ok, but no one could ever tell me any different that what I seen that day was not an angel sent from God himself answering a prayer that I had yet to pray.
