First let me say your site is amazing. The census sheets have helped fil in holes were all I had was oral geneology and family bibles. As for the black foot, both of my mother's parents are potter kin and my grandfather swore his mother told him he was part blackfoot Indian My grandmother told me once that blackfoot wasn't always used to mean the tribe. It was a word her parents used for mixed bloods. Have have verified Cherokee and Black Dutch (not african ) DNA and ancestors in the Potter, Cable and Stewart Families. The use of Blackfoot makes sense when discribing multi ethnic mountain folks. Of course this is just information from a woman that enjoyed making cough syrup in a still so who knows... I think you might have something! I always heard when I was little that we had Cherokee and Blackfoot indian in our lineage, through the Stanley side of the family. My mom said she always thought that we had some black/negro from somewhere in the same line that nobody would talk about. This side of the family was harder to research than the other side. Your explanation of Blackfoot makes a lot of sense!

Hi. Newbie here. I was told by my grandmother that she was blackfoot indian, and she was born in ky in 1903. I was on another genealogy site, where a few were stating that it was impossible for backfoot indians to be in ky. But through my research i can place blackfoot indians in OK in the late 1800's in the NARA archives, thru the United States Indian School. So, many could have traveled to KY, why not. And i agree that many did not list themselves as indian for fear of having their land taken away by the government. I don't know for sure if i have indian blood, but my families features show we do. My 2 kids are fair skinned, blue eyes, red hair...and their fathers mother was full blood cherokee! Proven.

i am trying to determine if y family were of Blackfoot dissent. My mother always said that her father was full blooded Blackfoot ; however, he was from the Oxley, Mo area, not an area noted for the Black foot tribe. Does anyone have any information about a Virgil Williamson probably born in the early 1900's in either southern Missouri or Northern Arkansaw.

My grandmother ,Ivalee Roberts Hamilton lived to be 102 years old. She was the daughter of John Roberts & Louisa Adkins. We often talked about our heritage. She told me several times about being a little Blackfoot Indian. She seemed sincere when she told me.

My Grandfather, Edward Martin Vance always told me that we have Indian blood which he thought was Cherokee. However, a couple of years ago I had a DNA test done and imagine my surprise when my most prominent marker came back Sioux. I was really confused because both sides of family go back generations in the hills of NC, WV, VA and KY. So I did some research and it seems that there were several Sioux tribes native to that region. They are listed as 'extinct, but it seems that they didn't really die out - they just married our relatives! For more info, follow this link: www.accessgenealogy.com/native/tribes/saponihist.htm'

Does anyone have any information on Jane Howell (d/o Jesse Larkin Howell & Euphrasia Dye). I have a picture of her and she is my great great grandmother. She looks native american and I've been told I have Cherokee bloodlines. I'm wondering if this is where the story came from and would love to confirm it. Also, This is is outstanding!!!
